Paracuru (Quebra Mar)

Paracuru is a gem of the Ceará coastline, about 90 km west of Fortaleza. It is one of the most technical and complete spots in Brazil, highly sought after by experienced riders for its unique mix of perfect waves, consistent wind, and untouched landscapes. Far from the hustle of Cumbuco, Paracuru maintains an authentic Brazilian atmosphere: a quiet village, fishermen at dawn, and sessions until sunset with only a few kites on the horizon. The main spot, Praia do Ronco do Mar — also known as Quebramar — is distinguished by a long natural reef that breaks the swell and creates powerful yet regular waves, forming an exceptional playground for kitesurfing. At low tide, the reef protects a flatter area inside, perfect for warming up before heading out for the sets offshore. This contrast between flat inside and outside waves makes Paracuru a rare spot: both demanding and educational, wild yet perfectly exploitable. Those who take the time to settle in discover a spot of incredible richness, where each tide and every hour of the day offers different sensations.

Location

Detailed information

The conditions at Paracuru are considered among the best in the Northeast for kitesurfing. The slightly east-oriented side-off wind creates a clean water surface, well-shaped waves, and a laminar wind, without turbulence. Depending on the tide, the spot's characteristics evolve. At low tide, the reef is more apparent, the water recedes, leaving a flatter area between the shore and the barrier. A small natural lagoon is then found, ideal for technical maneuvers and smooth starts. At medium or rising tide, the swell forms cleanly on the reef, offering long, powerful but regular waves. At high tide, the area becomes more challenging, perfect for experienced riders who enjoy playing with the ocean's power. Entry is easy but requires a minimum of attention to avoid the corals at low tide. The bottom is sandy inside, rocky on the reef, and the constant wind allows for easy return to the shore. It is an ideal spot for progressing in strapless, improving maneuvers in the waves, or simply enjoying one of the most beautiful corners of the Brazilian coastline.

Risks & Safety

  • Kitesurfing in Paracuru is generally safe, but one must remain attentive to the tide.
  • At low tide, the reef can become exposed and surprise those who navigate too close to the edge. It is better to avoid jumps in this area.
  • The waves from the outside, although regular, can be powerful: a good level is required to engage with them.
  • There is no organized rescue service, so it is better not to kite alone.
  • Finally, the rocky areas of the reef are visible at low tide: identify them before entering the water.
