Los Roques

At Cayo Sal, the wind most often works in side-shore to side-on depending on the exact orientation of the sandbar and the tide. The spot benefits from the general exposure of Los Roques to the trade winds, with navigation often more comfortable than in overly closed areas. When the wind is well established, one finds a water surface that is relatively easy to read, with space to head offshore and return without difficulty.

The water surface is generally flat or slightly choppy depending on the wind strength and boat passages. At low tide, some areas become flatter and shallower, improving control and facilitating takeoffs. At high tide, the spot remains navigable, but the water takes on a bit more movement near the edges and shallow areas.

Launching is most often done from a light sandy beach, with a fairly comfortable takeoff area if the wind is consistent. One should keep some margin at the start, especially if the wind occasionally turns side-off in certain sectors. The spot is suitable for riders who enjoy long clean runs, with more relaxed navigation than in choppy seas. The most pleasant area is located on the open parts of the cayo, away from obstacles and boat passage zones.
