Los Roques
Gran Roque, in the Los Roques archipelago in Venezuela, is mainly known as the gateway to the spot. The village itself is not the best area for kiting, but it serves as a practical base to reach the nearby islets and water areas more suitable for kitesurfing.
This area is appreciated for its simple atmosphere, clear waters, and very varied sailing conditions depending on the island and wind direction. Riders come here to string together sessions on lagoon spots, with a very kite safari oriented atmosphere.
On site, one must mainly think in terms of wind, boat shuttles, and authorized areas. To truly enjoy Los Roques, one generally does not stay on Gran Roque, but goes kiting on the surrounding islets.

Detailed information
Gran Roque is not a classic practice spot in the strict sense: several sources indicate that kitesurfing is not allowed there due to air traffic around the main island. In practice, Gran Roque is used as a logistical base, and then one reaches the nearby sailing areas by boat.
The sailing conditions in Los Roques are generally of the flat lagoon to light chop type, with sometimes a bit of small waves on the exposed edges. Depending on the tides and the chosen island, one can find very smooth and shallow water, or conversely, a slightly more choppy sea with swell relief offshore. On the spots close to Gran Roque, the wind can become side-off to offshore relative to the sandbanks and islets, which creates very flat areas but requires good management of drift and safety.
Launching generally takes place on islets accessible by boat, with limited and often narrow take-off zones. Riders mainly find water areas suitable for freeride, supervised beginners, and downwind, with navigation heavily depending on the excursion program. One must remain vigilant about the bottoms, corals, and shallow passages, especially when the water level drops.
