Cayo El Muerto
Venezuela · Federal Dependencies
Cayo El Muerto, in the Los Roques archipelago, is a popular spot for its clear and shallow waters. Kitesurfing takes place in a very open setting, with access usually organized by boat from Gran Roque.
It is a spot suitable for riders looking for flat water and consistent wind, with conditions often comfortable for progressing or riding cleanly in freeride and freestyle.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The spot mainly works with northeast trade winds, which are well-established from December to May. According to local guides, the wind is often established between 20 and 30 knots, with good riding windows during the day. Launching usually occurs from the boat in clear areas, then one navigates in a shallow and very readable lagoon.
The water surface is predominantly flat, with sometimes a slight chop depending on exposure and lagoon conditions. Tides have little influence on the practice according to available feedback, making the spot quite easy to read once on site. However, one must remain attentive to shallow areas, seagrass, and more exposed passages near the edges of the cayo.
The area is vast, but it is preferable to clearly identify the launch area and place the kite far from reefs or crowded zones. The spot remains very accessible, but it requires clean riding, especially when the wind picks up and boat traffic increases around the archipelago.
