Lagos

The Ria de Alvor lagoon, located between Lagos and Alvor in western Algarve, is a shallow and protected lagoon that stretches along Meia Praia beach. It is a reference spot for kitesurfing in the region, appreciated for its flat water and safe conditions.

The spot offers several access points, including Lagos kite beach and Alvor beach, with kitesurfing schools on site. Access is via a walk of about 400 meters on a firm sandy path, partly over a small stone bridge. It is an ideal place for beginners and freestylers looking for stable and less demanding conditions.

Detailed information

The Ria de Alvor lagoon works best at mid-tide and high tide, with excellent conditions depending on the tide configuration. At high tide, the lagoon becomes a vast flat playground perfect for independent riders and practicing new tricks. At low tide, the spot also offers flat water with visible sandbanks that create ideal sliding areas.

The dominant wind is the Nortada (north-west), often thermally supported, making it a very consistent spot. The wind orientation relative to the lagoon is generally side-shore to side-on, creating stable conditions. Launching is easy from the access beaches, and riders are usually shuttled to the center of the lagoon where the wind is most constant and the conditions safest.

The spot is not very tide-dependent to function, although conditions vary with water level. The sandbanks naturally create flat sliding areas, particularly appreciated by freestylers and foil riders. The current is very weak (less than 1 knot), making navigation safe.
