Lagos

The Ria de Alvor lagoon, located between Lagos and Alvor in western Algarve, is a shallow and protected lagoon that stretches along Meia Praia beach. It is a reference spot for kitesurfing in the region, appreciated for its flat water and safe conditions.

The spot offers several access points, including Lagos kite beach and Alvor beach, with kitesurfing schools on site. Access is via a walk of about 400 meters on a firm sandy path, partly over a small stone bridge. It is an ideal place for beginners and freestylers looking for stable and less demanding conditions.

The Ria de Alvor lagoon works best at mid-tide and high tide, with excellent conditions depending on the tide configuration. At high tide, the lagoon becomes a vast flat playground perfect for independent riders and practicing new tricks. At low tide, the spot also offers flat water with visible sandbanks that create ideal sliding areas.

The dominant wind is the Nortada (north-west), often thermally supported, making it a very consistent spot. The wind orientation relative to the lagoon is generally side-shore to side-on, creating stable conditions. Launching is easy from the access beaches, and riders are usually shuttled to the center of the lagoon where the wind is most constant and the conditions safest.

The spot is not very tide-dependent to function, although conditions vary with water level. The sandbanks naturally create flat sliding areas, particularly appreciated by freestylers and foil riders. The current is very weak (less than 1 knot), making navigation safe.

Vent ideal

Wdominant

The ideal conditions are found with a north-west wind (Nortada) between 16 and 25 knots, blowing regularly in the afternoon. These conditions create a flat and stable water surface perfect for all levels. The thermal wind support ensures a reliable and progressive session throughout the day.

État de la mer

The water surface of Ria de Alvor is very flat and shallow, making it an ideal spot for quick progression. The water is very clear, providing good visibility. The bottom is sandy with some rocks, particularly in the northern area of the lagoon. The sandbanks naturally create flat sliding areas, particularly appreciated by freestylers. The spot regularly offers glassy conditions, especially in the afternoon and late in the day.

Courants marins

The current in the Ria de Alvor lagoon is very weak, usually less than 1 knot, making navigation safe and predictable. The tide significantly influences the lagoon's appearance: at low tide, the depth decreases considerably and sandbanks become visible; at high tide, the lagoon expands and offers a larger water surface. The best conditions are found at mid-tide and high tide, with minimal currents and an optimal navigation area.

Taille de kite recommandée

For the Ria de Alvor lagoon, the recommended kite sizes vary according to the rider's weight and wind conditions. With an average wind of 16-25 knots, lighter riders can use kites of 9-11 m², while heavier riders will prefer kites of 12-14 m². For days with lighter winds, larger kites (14-17 m²) may be necessary. Smaller kites (7-9 m²) are useful for windy days or for practicing freestyle.

Météo & vent

The dominant wind regime is the Nortada, a north-west wind that blows regularly and is often thermally supported, particularly in the afternoon. This wind is very reliable and creates stable conditions for kitesurfing. The wind strength generally varies between 16 and 25 knots, which is ideal for most riders. A south wind can also occasionally blow, offering an interesting alternative.

Climat

Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The region experiences regular sunshine throughout the year, making it a pleasant destination even in winter. Temperatures generally remain mild, allowing for comfortable kiting almost all year round.

Profondeur

The depth of the Ria de Alvor lagoon is very gradual and shallow, making it a safe spot for beginners. At low tide, the depth can drop to only 1-2 meters in some areas, while at high tide, it reaches about 3-4 meters on average. The bottom is sandy with some rocks, particularly in the northern area. It is easy to stand in most areas, allowing riders to progress with confidence.

Température de l’eau

The water temperature in Algarve varies by season. In summer (June to September), the water reaches about 20-22°C, allowing for kiting in shorts and lycra. In autumn and spring, the temperature ranges between 16-19°C, requiring a lycra or a light wetsuit. In winter (December to February), the water cools to about 14-16°C, necessitating a full 3/2 mm wetsuit.

  • Rocks are exposed in the northern area of the lagoon, near the small stone bridge (Rocha Delicada), to be avoided or circumnavigated depending on conditions.

  • The depth varies significantly with the tide: at low tide, some areas become very shallow and may present uncovered sandbanks.

  • Beginners must absolutely contact a local kitesurfing school that will shuttle them to the center of the lagoon where the conditions are safest and the wind most consistent.

  • Care should be taken with other floating craft and local boats that may be navigating in the lagoon.
