Fuseta

The Fuseta lagoon, located 30 minutes from Faro in the Algarve, is a renowned kitesurfing spot offering exceptional conditions for freestyle and big air. It is a favorite place for riders of all levels due to its flat and shallow water, ideal for progressing or pushing one's limits.

The spot is distinguished by its consistent thermal wind called nortada, which mainly blows in the summer and creates predictable and reliable conditions. The lagoon also offers the possibility to ride in the ocean by crossing the sandbar, providing access to two different environments on the same site.

The Fuseta lagoon primarily works at high tide, when the water surface is optimal for navigation. At low tide, conditions become more technical and less accessible. The dominant wind is side-shore from the southwest, creating very favorable conditions for kitesurfing.

Inside the lagoon, the wind is generally stronger than at the surface due to a natural Venturi effect. The spot allows for easy riding with minimal equipment, including light lycra. The launch and landing area is well defined, with easy access from the beach. Since 2016, a regulated zone between the island facing Praia da Fuseta Ria and the front coast is allowed for kitesurfing during the bathing season. It is important not to cross the Ria Formosa river and to maintain a safe distance from boats.

The water surface is flat and shallow, ideal for freestyle and tricks, with a depth generally between the knees and waist. Beware of sea urchins: it is recommended to wear water shoes or remain vigilant when entering the water.

Vent ideal
SWdominant

The ideal conditions are between 11 and 18 knots with a side-on wind from the southwest. These conditions offer a perfect balance between power and control, ideal for all levels. The nortada in the late afternoon, between 16 and 25 knots, is perfect for big air and advanced freestyle. For hydrofoil riders or those seeking lighter conditions, the morning levante offers an interesting alternative with gentler wind and fewer people.

État de la mer

The water surface of the lagoon is exceptionally flat, making it an ideal spot for freestyle and learning new tricks. The shallow water provides extra safety during falls. In case of a crash or a failed loop, riders quickly touch the bottom, which requires good confidence and control. The bottom is mainly composed of sand, making the conditions safe and predictable.

Courants marins

The current in the Fuseta lagoon is generally weak and manageable. However, one must remain vigilant near the Ria Formosa channel where the current can become stronger. Tidal conditions play an important role: high tide is the optimal time to ride, while low tide makes the spot less accessible and more technical.

Taille de kite recommandée

The recommended kite sizes depend on the wind conditions. For the light morning conditions (levante), a 12 to 14 m² kite is appropriate. For standard nortada conditions (16-18 knots), a 9 to 11 m² kite offers a good balance. For strong late afternoon conditions (22-25 knots), a 7 to 9 m² kite is recommended. Experienced riders can adjust according to their weight and riding style.

Météo & vent

The dominant wind regime is the nortada, a thermal wind that blows regularly from March to October. This wind usually starts around 1 PM and reaches its peak in the late afternoon, providing predictable and reliable conditions. The nortada blows from the southwest and typically produces 16 to 25 knots, with peaks reaching 30 knots or more in the late afternoon.

A second wind regime, the levante, can occasionally blow from the east. This wind is stronger after sunrise and fades by noon, offering milder and less crowded conditions in the morning. The levante is particularly appreciated by hydrofoil riders seeking lighter conditions.

Climat

The climate of the region is Mediterranean with hot and dry summers. In summer, the air temperature reaches around 35°C, while the water is around 20°C. In winter, temperatures are more moderate. The region enjoys significant sunshine throughout the year, making it a pleasant destination even outside the high season.

Profondeur

The depth of the lagoon is shallow and gradual, with a depth generally between the knees and waist (about 0.5 to 1.5 meters). The bottom consists of fine and stable sand, making the conditions safe for learning and tricks. This shallow depth offers extra safety during falls, as riders quickly touch the bottom. However, in case of a violent crash or a failed loop, one must be prepared to touch the bottom quickly.

Température de l’eau

In summer (June to September), the water is around 20°C, allowing riders to wear light lycra or no wetsuit for those tolerant to cold. In winter (December to February), the water is colder, around 15°C, requiring a 3 mm wetsuit to stay warm during extended sessions. The intermediate months (March to May and October to November) offer progressive temperatures between these two extremes.

⚠️ Risques & Sécurité

  • Sea urchins may be present in the lagoon: wear water shoes or remain vigilant when entering the water.

  • Never cross the Ria Formosa river and maintain a safe distance from boats navigating in the area.

  • During the bathing season (generally June to September), kitesurfing is strictly limited to the designated area between the island and the front coast; lifeguards do not tolerate any exceptions.

  • The nortada can increase very quickly: check your trim early and reduce your kite if you see whitecaps forming rapidly.

  • The launch area is very limited: launch quickly and cleanly, and help your neighbors to avoid tangles that could ruin your session and theirs.
