Portugal · Faro
Praia de Cabanas de Tavira is located opposite the village of Cabanas, in the heart of the Ria Formosa natural park, about thirty minutes from Faro. Kitesurfing takes place between the long sandbank of Ilha de Cabanas and the open sea, in a very preserved environment.
It is a spot known to kiters for its flat and shallow water on the lagoon side and for its regular thermals during the season. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a few kite schools based in Tavira and Cabanas using the beach as their main base.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The spot operates on the island part of Ilha de Cabanas, accessible by small boat from the village. The beach is wide and entirely sandy, with a dedicated launch area further away from the parasol and bather zone, particularly around the Kitesurf Eolis school. The dominant wind from spring to autumn is a thermal from SW that usually arrives side-on shore relative to the ocean beach, providing a large safety margin for drifting. In winter, E / SE winds can arise, more side-shore to side-off depending on the precise orientation of the sandbank, which requires more vigilance.
On the lagoon side (Ria Formosa), the water is flat to slightly choppy and often shallow, ideal for freeride, first runs, and freestyle. Depending on the sources and local configuration, kitesurfing can be done in the lagoon at all tides, but the best conditions are generally found around mid-tide to high tide, when there is enough water to avoid dragging the board on the bottom. At very low tide, some areas become very shallow with sandbanks that emerge, which requires careful selection of the kitesurfing area.
On the ocean side, the water is rather choppy with small waves (often 0.5 to 1 m, sometimes more during south or west swells). This allows for variation between the flat lagoon and a freeride bump & jump on the sea side. The launch is done directly from the large sandy beach, with plenty of space to lay out lines, even at high tide. Launching is simple as long as one stays within the marked kite area and away from the parasols.
The spot is classified as accessible to all levels: beginners in shallow lagoon, intermediates and advanced riders who enjoy the space for long runs. The width of the beach and the absence of major obstacles make equipment management more comfortable, but one must take into account the shuttle boats and small fishing vessels that circulate in the channels of the Ria Formosa. Visibility is good, but always maintain a safety margin around the passage areas. Overall, Cabanas is a very functional spot: flat lagoon, regular thermal, plenty of space, and simple logistics once on site.
