Penn ar Stréjou

The Grève Blanche at Penn ar Stréjou, near Plouguerneau in Brittany, is a wild beach facing west on the northern tip of Finistère. It offers an open space facing the Atlantic Ocean, with fine sand and an unobstructed view of the sea.

It is a popular spot for locals for kitesurfing and windsurfing, thanks to its exposure to the prevailing winds in the region. A kitesurfing school is located nearby, making it easy for visiting riders to access.

The atmosphere is calm, away from tourist crowds, with typical landscapes of the Breton coast.

Location

Detailed information

The beach is oriented west, making it ideal for side-on to side-shore winds coming from the northwest or west, which are the most frequent in Brittany. A wind at 270° (west) is perfect, as it blows directly along the beach without too many obstacles.

Launching is easy on the sand, with a wide and clear take-off area at the water's edge. The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, but you need to stay vigilant on the sides where the beach narrows.

Depending on the tides, the water state varies: at high tide, it is more chop with short waves due to the Atlantic fetch; at low tide, the beach widens and offers a more stable space for learning. The best sessions are in the middle of the rising tide to avoid overly dry areas.

Local peculiarity: exposure to Atlantic depressions that bring strong and regular winds, but beware of sudden squalls typical of Finistère.
