Gâvres

The Petite Mer de Gâvres is a closed inner lagoon located in southern Brittany, near Lorient. Protected from ocean currents and sheltered by the peninsula, it offers an exceptional natural setting with a calm and secure body of water. It is a very popular spot among kitesurfers for its accessibility and tranquil atmosphere.

The bottom of this small sea is characterized by a shallow water depth and a natural encasement that creates ideal conditions for kitesurfing. You can stand everywhere, making it a particularly suitable place for beginners and riders looking for a safe glide. The area also offers excellent quality of consistent wind throughout the year.

Location

Detailed information

The spot works with wind from the west to east sector, passing through the south. The best orientations are west, southwest, and south. The wind from west to northwest is particularly regular and reliable.

The Petite Mer mainly works at high tide and up to 2 hours and 30 minutes after. At high tide, the water is completely navigable. Take-off and landing occur on the small beach below, directly adjacent to the lagoon. Care must be taken with the electrical line nearby the take-off: launching and landing the kite must be done downwind of this line.

The space for take-off and landing is limited, and the small beach is popular with families during the summer, so vigilance is necessary. The water itself is very safe with few dangers, but algae are present, especially in summer. Wearing booties is advised as the bottom has pebbles. Starting at 20 knots of west to southwest wind, many windsurfers frequent the spot.

Important: from October 1 to March 31, a biotope protection order limits navigation in the upper third of the Petite Mer to protect birds. This restriction applies to all watercraft, including kitesurfing. The Gâvres Kite association is currently working to define a new authorized launch area.
