Riantec

The island of Kerner in Riantec, Brittany, is a small intertidal island in the Petite Mer de Gâvres. It is revealed at low tide, connected to the mainland by mudflats and salt meadows. It is a quiet spot for kitesurfing, surrounded by a maritime landscape rich in biodiversity.

The Maison de l'île Kerner offers a discovery of the local marine environment. The site attracts visitors for its preserved nature and water activities like kite. Riders find a protected space, away from the crowds.

Location

Detailed information

The spot of the island of Kerner works well with a crosswind from Riantec, typically side-shore or side-on coming from the southwest or west. At high tide, the Petite Mer fills completely and offers a large flat and shallow navigation area around the island. The launch can be done directly from the shores of Riantec or the exposed flats at low tide, with a wide take-off area on the dry seagrass.

The water surface is shallow with muddy and sandy bottoms, perfect for easy restarts. At low tide, the island emerges and the mudflats limit navigation to narrow channels, making the spot technical but manageable for locals who know the passes. Prefer high tide for a full flat session without stress, with enough water for freeride or basic freestyle.

Local feature: the strong tidal range (up to 5m) radically changes the spot twice a day. Check the times precisely, and stay in the central area to avoid peripheral seagrass. Easy parking access from Riantec, but no dedicated kite infrastructure.

Risks & Safety

  • Respect the bird nesting areas on the neighboring island of Pins, which is closed to the public.

  • Check the tides: at low water, the spot almost completely empties with treacherous mudflats.

  • Be cautious of seagrass and mud on the bottom, which complicate falls and restarts.

  • Avoid solo sessions, as there is no organized rescue on site.
