Barbados
Long Beach is a kitesurfing spot located on the south-east coast of Barbados, in the parish of Christ Church. This beach stretches over 1.5 to 2.5 km of white sand, offering a vast and uncrowded space, away from busy tourist areas.
It is an isolated place with a wild atmosphere, perfect for quiet sessions. Access is via stairs from the road, and it often requires a bit of walking from Silver Sands to the east.
The spot mainly attracts riders for its consistent conditions and wave potential, with nice kickers for advanced jumps.
The wind generally blows cross-on or side-on from the left, ideal when it comes from NE, ENE or E, with consistency throughout the day thanks to the trade winds. In winter, it is more side-to-side onshore, and in summer side-on to onshore. The riding area is wide due to the length of the beach, with a sandy entry without rocks and plenty of space for takeoff and landing.
The water surface features small waves near the shore (shore break) and medium waves 1-3m on the outer reef, perfect for wave riding. It works at all tides, with no strong dependence on coefficients. Beginners learning basic skills can practice in the open space, but the shore break makes body dragging technical. For advanced riders, there are kickers for jumping and waves to ride.
Local feature: sparsely populated spot, ideal for downwinders to the east, but be careful to stay upwind of the middle of the beach for access. No bathers, but watch the reef in the distance.
Ideal conditions are with NE to E cross-on winds of 18-25 kts, for clean waves and a smooth ride on the reef.
The water surface is choppy with medium waves, small waves at the shore break and larger ones on the reef. Good for surfing if there is no wind, with a sandy bottom near the shore.
Currents are generally weak along the beach but can strengthen near the outer reef. Tides have little impact on conditions, with the spot working well at low and high tide.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 11m² in medium trade wind, or 7-9m² when it picks up for wave riding.
The prevailing winds are the east trade winds (E, NE, ENE), consistent and steady, with typical strengths of 15-25 kts in high season. They blow side-on from the left, perfect for freeride, freestyle, wakestyle, and wave.
The climate is tropical, warm year-round with average temperatures around 27-30°C. The trade wind season from December to May brings reliable wind and little rain, while June-July is calmer and wetter. The best months for kiting are January to May, August to December.
The depth increases gradually with a sandy bottom near the shore, foot possible at the start before the reef further out.
The water remains warm year-round between 26-29°C, boardshorts are sufficient without a wetsuit.
