The main wind comes from the north to northeast, blowing in perfect side-on on the peninsula, making the Mini Lagoon ideal for launching and riding. The launch area is directly from the beach of the Panama Kite Center, with ample space for beginners and advanced riders. The lagoon offers butter-flat water around mid-tide, perfect for first lessons, freestyle, or foiling, with waist-deep water.
At low tide, it becomes too shallow or dries out in places, making riding technical. At high tide, the water surface fills up and becomes more chop with small waves due to the powerful Pacific tides. The beach widens to 200m at low tide and shrinks to almost nothing at high tide. For the Mini Lagoon, expect a 5-10 minute downwinder from the main beach; it fills up quickly in the morning, avoid weekends when locals from Panama City arrive.
The center organizes downwind safaris of 30-60 minutes towards the end of the bay, with mangroves and flat water, then pick-up by truck. No obstacles in the water, hard sandy bottom without rocks.
Ideal conditions are with N-NE side-on wind around mid-tide, for flat water without currents or waves. Perfect in the morning for smooth wind and fewer crowds.
The water surface is ultra-flat in the Mini Lagoon at mid-tide, with small waves and chop offshore or in strong wind. No shorebreak or significant waves, clean sandy bottom.
The powerful tides of the Pacific strongly influence the spot, with weak currents in the lagoon but to be monitored when downwinding. Around mid-tide, conditions are optimal without troublesome currents; offshore, the flow can accelerate towards the bay's exit.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² depending on the strength of the trade winds, smaller for freeride sessions in the bay, larger for light days in the lagoon.
The constant trade winds from the north to northeast sweep across the bay, with regular and strong side-on winds, particularly smooth in the morning. The regime is reliable year-round, ideal for evening sessions when the sun sets behind the mountains.
The tropical climate of Punta Chame offers warm temperatures year-round, around 28-32°C during the day. The constant trade winds from the north ensure reliable wind for 12 months, with a score of 78/100 and the best months from January to December. It's a destination to escape the European winter.
The depth in the Mini Lagoon is waist-deep, gradually with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand for a long time, ideal for beginners, but it gets shallow at low tide.
Water temperatures hover around 26-29°C year-round in this tropical Pacific area, with no need for thick neoprene.
