Informations utiles
The large lagoon of Punta Chame offers side-on to side-shore wind conditions, with a steady flow coming from the north-northeast. The water is extremely flat, particularly around mid-tide, making it an ideal spot for freestyle and technical maneuvers. At low tide, the lagoon can become too shallow or partially dry, while at high tide, the water becomes more choppy.
Launching is generally done from the main spot, followed by a downwind of about 20 minutes to reach the large lagoon. This lagoon is immense, offering plenty of space to navigate without congestion. It is recommended to treat this spot as a downwind and to arrange a pick-up from the lagoon due to its distance from the kite schools. Optimal conditions occur between mid-low tide and mid-high tide, offering a window of 2 to 3 hours per tidal cycle.
The ideal conditions at the large lagoon of Punta Chame occur with a wind of 12 to 18 knots coming from the north-northeast, creating a perfect side-on orientation. These conditions are most frequent around mid-tide, offering a window of 2 to 3 hours per tidal cycle. The morning, when the wind is lighter and more consistent, often provides the best conditions for freestyle. The afternoon generally brings more power, which is better suited for riders seeking speed and intensity.
The state of the water varies significantly with the tide. At low tide, the lagoon offers extremely flat conditions, ideal for freestyle and learning. At rising tide, small ripples and chop begin to appear, creating more dynamic conditions. At high tide, the water becomes more choppy with small waves, particularly in the afternoon when the wind picks up. The sandbanks that emerge at low tide add an extra dimension to sessions, allowing for spectacular downwind safaris.
The Panamanian Pacific experiences strong tides at Punta Chame, with significant tidal ranges throughout the day. At low tide, the beach expands up to 200 meters, while at high tide, it can almost disappear in places. The currents in the lagoon are generally weak to moderate, but one must remain vigilant near the channels where the current can become stronger. The tidal cycle creates very different conditions depending on the time of day, which is crucial for planning your session.
The recommended kite sizes depend on the wind conditions and the rider's weight. For winds of 12 to 15 knots, a kite of 13 to 15 square meters is generally appropriate. For stronger winds, of 16 to 18 knots, a kite of 11 to 13 square meters offers more control. Lighter riders may use slightly larger kites, while heavier riders will prefer smaller kites to maintain better maneuverability in the flat conditions of the lagoon.
The wind regime at Punta Chame is dominated by northeast trade winds, blowing consistently and regularly. These trade winds are particularly stable from December to March, considered the high season.
