Sun Island, in the South Ari Atoll in the Maldives, is a highly regarded kitesurfing spot for its protected lagoon and easy access from the resort. The sailing area is wide, with space to launch and land the kite, making it a reassuring place for both progression and more committed riding.

The spot is especially appreciated for its practical setting: shallow water, clear beaches, and often consistent conditions during the good season. It offers a true playground for riders looking for flat water with a high level of comfort on land.

Location

Detailed information

The spot mainly works with a wind from the east to northeast, generally side-on to side-shore relative to the starting beach. The lagoon's configuration offers very accessible navigation, with a large area of shallow water that reassures beginners and allows more advanced riders to practice maneuvers in good conditions.

Launching is done from the resort beach or from the dedicated nautical area, where there is enough space to prepare the equipment and launch cleanly. The water surface generally remains flat to slightly choppy, with a cleaner edge inside the lagoon and a bit more texture when the wind picks up. The tide mainly influences the usable depth and the width of the navigation area, but the spot remains navigable over a wide range of hours due to its lagoon character.

One must remain attentive to boat crossing areas and the organization of the nautical center, especially close to the beach. Aside from these points, the spot remains easy to read and quite comfortable for a long session.

  • The shallow depth requires monitoring the tide and avoiding overly aggressive stances near the shore.
  • The wind can be irregular at times, especially in the presence of squalls or near the resort structures.
