Rio de Janeiro

Welcome to Barra da Tijuca, the ultimate urban spot in Brazil. On nearly 18 kilometers of golden sand, this vast beach lined with skyscrapers and mountains offers a spectacular playground for local and visiting kitesurfers. Just minutes from downtown Rio, here you find the perfect balance between nature, wind, and urban energy. The Barra is washed by the swell of the South Atlantic, swept by a warm and steady wind from the east. The scenery is surreal: on one side, modern buildings and seaside cafes; on the other, jungle-covered mountains and the Pedra da Gávea in the background. Kitesurfing at Barra means experiencing a constant contrast: the freedom of the open sea against the vibrations of the city. Riders perform spectacular jumps in front of onlookers, wings and kites cross above the waves, and sunsets turn every session into a postcard.

It’s a lively, powerful, and accessible spot, a symbol of modern Brazilian kitesurfing.

Location

Detailed information

The Barra da Tijuca is a vast and clean ocean spot, suitable for all styles. East to southeast wind, side-on, between 14 and 22 knots, stronger in the southern summer (December to March). At low tide, the water becomes choppy fluid, ideal for freeride and big air. At high tide, the swell sets in: waves of 1 to 2 meters, sometimes more, perfect for surfkite. Sandy bottom, no rocks, and very wide beach facilitating entry even in strong wind. Advanced riders love to ride along the coast to Recreio dos Bandeirantes, which is wilder and windier. In contrast, the central area of Barra is perfect for freeride, jumps, and downloops in clean and steady wind.

  • Very wide beach, ideal for launching and landing without risk.
  • It’s an accessible and clean spot, but should be practiced with caution when the swell strengthens.
