Dolphin Cove, located in South Padre Island, is a well-known backup spot when the swell comes into the channel. It is a favorite area for local riders due to its cleaner waves when conditions align, with easy access from the Isla Blanca Park area and often calmer sessions than offshore.
The spot mainly works when the wind and swell combine correctly, with a water surface that can alternate between flat, chop, and small waves. The location requires some spot reading, but it remains interesting for riding close to the protected area of the channel.

The wind most often arrives in a side-on to onshore direction depending on the orientation of the seafront and the channel, with sometimes more side-shore phases on the exposed edges. The water surface depends heavily on the swell size and tide: with small swell, one mainly finds flat to chop, while with more swell, the waves become cleaner on the shallows of the basin and along the channel banks.
Launching is done from the beach or the access areas near Isla Blanca Park, with a quick departure towards the protected bay. The take-off area is more comfortable on the wide sand at the edge of the spot, but one must keep space as the area can be busy with wind and local traffic. The best lines are generally found in the sheltered part of the basin, while areas close to the channel require more attention due to maritime traffic and current variations.
The spot is rather suited for intermediate to advanced riders, especially when the swell comes from the east or southeast and the wind remains regular. In strong wind, the water can become more choppy and navigation more technical, while in moderate conditions, the spot offers really good sections for freeride and small waves.
