Isla Verde Beach, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a long urban beach that is easily accessible and well-known among local riders. It is a convenient spot for kitesurfing when the wind is good, with a very lively city and beach atmosphere.

In this area, conditions can change quickly, but the beach remains attractive for a quick session when the trade winds settle in. The setting is simple and direct, and the water is in immediate proximity to the shore.

Location

Detailed information

Isla Verde Beach works best when the wind comes in with a side-shore to side-on component from the ENE to E, which remains the most exploitable case along this coastline. With wind forecasted around 18.7 knots, it is a beach that can offer good freeride sessions if the orientation is clean and fairly consistent. The water surface is generally cleaner near the shore, but it can become more chaotic as the wind strengthens or the swell from the open sea rises in the area.

Launching is done from the beach, with a launch area to be organized properly as it is a frequented urban sector. It is important to keep space for takeoff and wing storage, especially when there are many people on the sand. The spot is more comfortable with a medium to high tide, as there is a bit more water at launch and a simpler navigation area to read. At low tide, some areas become more technical as one approaches the shore, and it is important to monitor depth variations and bottom quality.

The spot is more suited for freeride than for technical freestyle. Navigation is more enjoyable in the area close to the shore, where the water remains readable and the wind pressure more stable. However, one must remain attentive to beach users, swimmers, and clearance areas, as the environment is very frequented. When the wind is well established and steady, Isla Verde can offer a very good session, but one should not expect a perfect water surface at all times.

Risks & Safety

  • The beach is urban and frequented, so it is important to avoid swimmers and maintain a very clean takeoff trajectory.
  • The wind can be gusty and the water surface can become irregular, which requires keeping some margin.
  • The launch areas are sometimes narrow, so it is important to monitor ground space for setup and landing.
