Miami

Ocean Terrace Beach (76th Street), in the North Beach area of Miami Beach, is a popular spot for kiters due to its fine sand and easy access. Located a few kilometers from downtown, it offers a lively atmosphere with nearby restaurants and shops.

It is a convenient place for kite sessions, with a designated launch area and a consistent wind in season. Locals often come here to ride in a relaxed urban setting.

The narrow beach allows for quick access to the water, and despite occasional seaweed, it remains a solid choice for kitesurfing enthusiasts.

Ocean Terrace Beach works well with a side-on to side-shore wind coming from NNE, NE, ENE, ESE, SE or SSE, which blows directly onto the north-south oriented beach. The riding area is wide but can become crowded on nice days, with many kiters and bathers right next to the launch area.

Launching takes place on a soft sandy beach with a medium-sized takeoff/landing area, marked to separate riders from walkers. The water surface is independent of tides, with a mix of chop, small and medium waves depending on the swell, more unstable near the shore.

Be cautious of other users nearby: launching requires vigilance to avoid collisions. Conditions are variable, with sometimes patchy wind offshore, ideal for freeride or strapless sessions in small waves.

Ideal conditions are a wind from NE to SE at 18-25 knots, clean side-shore for a rideable water surface without too much excessive chop. Avoid overly onshore days that accentuate the waves.

État de la mer

The water surface presents a constant chop with small to medium waves, especially with side-on wind. The water is clear turquoise but can be covered with sargassum in season.

Mixed swell makes the waves unstable and shifty near the shore, perfect for moderate wave riding.

Courants marins

Currents are generally weak to moderate along the Miami Beach coast, influenced by ocean tides. There is no major channel nearby, but caution is advised in case of swell.

Tides do not impact sailing conditions, as the spot remains navigable in low or high tide.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in light to moderate wind, and 7 to 9 m² when it picks up with fronts. Adjust according to your weight and style.

Météo & vent

The wind regime is dominated by the season east-southeast trade winds, reinforced by northeast cold fronts in winter. Typical speeds range from 15-25 knots, with patchy but regular sessions.

In summer, thermal winds can pick up in the afternoon, while during the rainy season, storms bring strong but unpredictable winds.

Climat

Miami Beach enjoys a warm subtropical climate year-round, with average temperatures around 25-30°C during the day. Winter brings occasional cold fronts from the north, cooling the air, while summer is humid and rainy.

The best months for kiteboarding are from October to April, which are drier, but the spot works well 12 months a year thanks to the consistent mildness.

Profondeur

La profondeur augmente progressivement depuis une plage sableuse, avec pied jusqu'à 20-30 mètres du bord selon les marées. Fond principalement sableux et propre.

Température de l’eau

The water remains warm year-round, around 24-29°C. In winter, it drops to 22-24°C during cold fronts, a shorty wetsuit is often sufficient.
