Edgewater State Park
États-Unis · Ohio
Edgewater State Park, on the south shore of Lake Erie near Cleveland, is an urban spot known for its easy access and large sandy beach. It is a favorite place for local riders to kitesurf close to the city, with a practical and straightforward atmosphere.
The spot operates on a large freshwater lake, with a sailing area that is often calmer than the ocean, but capable of producing short chop and sometimes waves when the wind picks up. The environment is very exposed to park activity and summer crowds, so it's important to keep an eye on coexisting with swimmers.
The spot is generally navigated in side-shore to side-on depending on the wind direction, with better navigation logic when the wind comes from the north to northeast or from the west axis on the lake. The beach is wide, with easy launching from the sand, but one must remain attentive to the swimming area and the park's organization during peak times. Several guides indicate a more comfortable launch from the lower part of the beach, with space to rig and launch the kite, while the ends of the spot may be less suitable depending on site occupancy.
The water surface is that of a large lake, so the sea does not impose tides, but the level and state of the water can vary with wind and atmospheric pressure. Conditions are often cleaner near the shore during moderate winds, then become significantly more choppy when the wind picks up, with rapid chop and more formed sections in strong winds. Navigation mainly occurs in the clear area offshore from the beach, staying away from swimmers and lakefront activities. The spot is rated as intermediate by several guides, as it already requires skill to manage traffic, chop, and rapid water surface variations.
