The Washout, on the east coast of Folly Beach in South Carolina, is mainly known as a surf spot frequented by locals and visiting riders. It is an area open to the Atlantic, with a wide beach and easy access from the eastern end of the island.

The spot mainly works with a side-on to side-shore wind coming from SW, S, or SE, as the beach is open to the Atlantic and allows for interesting clearance space for launching and takeoff. With the wind forecast at 21.1 knots, we are on a usable navigation beach, but one must remain attentive to the wind pressure near the shore and local boating traffic.
The water surface is a beach break that varies with the tide. At medium to high tide, the area can take on more size and become more structured, while at low tide, one often finds more sandbars and flatter areas in places. Launching occurs directly from the beach, with a preparation area to prioritize that is wide enough to keep distance from swimmers, surfers, and other riders.
The cleanest navigation area is generally located in front of the open beach, where the sandbars leave a decent launch corridor. The spot is not a protected lagoon or a closed bay, so one must accept a livelier water surface than on a flat spot.
