États-Unis · South Carolina
Hunting Island, near Beaufort in South Carolina, is a long beach spot exposed to the Atlantic swells. It is a site appreciated for its easy access, natural setting, and the consistency of its sessions when the sea is well organized.
The spot works on a sandy bottom and mainly takes the form of an open beachbreak. Riders find a fairly versatile playground here, with waves that can become cleaner at the right coefficients and during high tide.
Hunting Island is an exposed beachbreak spot that takes swells from almost all directions, with a fairly simple reading of the spot for an autonomous rider. The water surface is generally in beach waves, with cleaner sections when the tide rises and the wind is not too strong offshore. The best sessions often occur with an offshore or side-off wind coming from W to NW, as this smooths the waves and keeps the face cleaner. When the wind shifts to S to SE, it becomes more favorable for beach surfing but less clean for kiting, with a more disordered water surface and more chop.
Access is via the main beach of the park, and it is often more convenient to walk towards the north or south of the island to find a more open and less crowded area. The launch is done on sand, with a launch area to be organized away from swimmers and potential natural obstacles. The spot remains especially interesting at mid-tide and high tide, as the beach works better when the water column is sufficient and the waves break more regularly. In the most frequented area, one must keep an eye on the presence of people, on the park accesses, and on the narrower areas where the shorebreak can become more tense.
