Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

The Plage Ouest in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, on the Mediterranean coast, offers a long stretch of fine, clean sand with refreshing shallow waters. It is a spot known for its favorable conditions for kitesurfing thanks to the regular winds and its open space.

The beach attracts riders for its easy access and long walks along the shore. In summer, the mornings are calmer with less wind and fewer people.

Close to the village, it combines relaxation and sports practice in a typical Camargue setting.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The beach is oriented west, making it ideal for west winds in side-on or side-shore, offering a good angle for launching and landing. The Mistral from the north to northwest often blows side to side-on, perfect for safely navigating over 10 km of continuous beach without major obstacles. In summer, with south-west or south winds, it is also side-on, but the southeast marine wind is offshore and not recommended as it pushes out to sea; in this case, move north near the Gacholle lighthouse for a better return to shore.

The navigation area extends over the central beach and northward, with easy launching on flat sand. The water is shallow for about 150 meters, ideal for beginners and foiling when moving a bit further out. The water state varies: from the west, it forms with small playful waves; with north mistral, it remains flat or with a slight chop if there was a tramontane the day before. The marked or designated areas must be respected to coexist with bathers and windsurfers.

Be aware of regulations: kitesurfing is prohibited on the central beach of the town center year-round, and specific zones at Plage Ouest are allowed outside the summer season. Check local regulations before your session.

SW

Ideal conditions are with northwest mistral side-on to side-shore, medium strength of 15-25 knots, for a flat to slightly formed surface. Side-on west winds are perfect for fun and safe sessions.

Sea state

The water state is often flat to choppy due to the mistral, with small waves from the west or southwest. The shallow waters remain calm near the shore, ideal for progression, and form better as you move away. Good quality clean and clear water.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak on this shallow beach, but they can intensify near channels or during low tide out to sea. The tide has little influence on the spot due to the opening to the sea, but prefer the rising tide for more safety.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 11m² for moderate mistral, 7 to 9m² when it is strong, and 10 to 12m² for the lighter south thermal. Adjust according to your weight and level to make the most of the local winds.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind is the Mistral from the north to northwest, regular and strong, especially in winter and spring. West winds bring consistent conditions, while the south thermal blows in the afternoons during summer. Spring easterly gusts are possible for more wavy sessions.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of the region offers hot, dry summers with temperatures around 25-30°C, and mild winters around 10-15°C. Spring and autumn are pleasant for kitesurfing with a good balance between warmth and wind. The area is navigable year-round according to data, but summer sees more thermal winds.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy bottom. You can stand for a long time, up to 150 meters from the shore, perfect for beginners and those learning.

Water temperature

In summer, the water reaches 20-24°C, comfortable in a shorty. In spring and autumn, expect 15-19°C, a lycra is often sufficient. In winter, it drops to around 12-14°C, plan for a 5/3 wetsuit.
