Bouvante

Font d'Urle is a snowkite spot located in the Vercors region of Drôme, in Bouvante, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Nestled at over 1400 meters above sea level, this plateau offers vast terrain for snow kiting in winter. It is a family-friendly and welcoming place, known for its wide open spaces without obstacles.

The site attracts riders for its preserved natural setting, surrounded by centuries-old forests and mountain landscapes. There is a modest ski resort with slopes for all levels, but it is mainly the 300-hectare plateau that gives the spot its reputation among kitesurfers.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Font d'Urle spot is oriented for a dominant northern wind, ideal in side-on or side-shore conditions from NW to NE quadrants, allowing for powerful traction without the risk of drifting away. The navigation area extends over a 300-hectare free ride plateau, completely open and free of obstructive evacuation corridors, perfect for freeride or race kite sessions.

Launching and taking off can be done directly from the resort parking or the edges of the slopes, with easy access via ski lifts when they are operating. The water surface is generally flat to light chop on groomed or powdery snow, with no tidal influence since it is a mountain altitude spot.

Local feature: the northern aerology ensures a steady and strong wind, but gusts at the top of the plateau should be anticipated. The marked areas for Nordic skiing often serve as a base for launching the kite, and the hilly terrain allows for jumps and long runs without interruption.

SE

Ideal conditions are a wind from N to NE between 15 and 30 knots, stable and side-on to maximize power on the plateau.

Sea state

The state of the snow varies: flat in groomed areas, moderate chop in hilly or powdery terrain. In optimal conditions, the plateau offers a smooth and vast surface for endless runs.

Sea currents

No currents or tides at this mountain altitude spot. Navigation is done on snow, without marine influence.

Recommended kite size

Choose kite sizes from 8 to 12 m² depending on wind strength and your weight, with kites suitable for freeride or racing.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is dominated by a constant northern flow, often reinforced by winter anticyclonic conditions. Wind speeds regularly reach 20-30 knots on the plateau, making the spot windy as desired throughout the season.

No specific local name, but this northern wind ensures explosive sessions for snowkite.

Climate

The climate in Vercors is mountainous, with cold and snowy winters from December to April, and mild summers around 20°C. Winter temperatures often drop below -5°C at night, ideal for good snow quality.

Precipitation is regular in the cold season, favoring consistent snow cover on the plateau.

Depth

No water depth, snow or mixed grass-snow bottom depending on snow cover. The plateau is generally vast and flat.

Water temperature

No applicable water temperature, snowkite spot. The air is cold, so a full winter suit is recommended.
