Asnelles

The beach of Asnelles, located on the Normandy coast near Arromanches, offers a historical setting with the remnants of the artificial harbor from the D-Day landings. It is a unique kitesurfing spot for slalom enthusiasts around the pontoons, with stunning views of the landscape and the history of the place.

The fine sand and favorable winds make it an ideal playground, especially for riders who enjoy a calm sea. Locals come here for relaxed sessions in a peaceful coastal village.

Close to Courseulles and Ver-sur-Mer, it is an accessible spot with parking and camping nearby.

Location

Detailed information

The beach of Asnelles is oriented west, which favors side-shore north-west winds for experienced riders, and side-on north-east for beginners with a flat water surface. The launch area is directly on the fine sand, wide at low tide, but more technical at high tide near the pontoons of Arromanches.

The navigation area is small, centered around the remnants of the artificial harbor where you can slalom between the structures. At high tide, prefer kitefoiling to take advantage of the increased depth; at falling tide, switch to a surfboard on the small waves that form; and finish at low tide in wakestyle or freestyle on perfect flat.

The best winds are off-shore or side-shore, never from the south which is side-off and unmanageable. Prefer a tide coefficient above 70 for optimal sessions. Launching takes place on the clear beach, with few bathers outside the summer season.

Risks & Safety

  • Tides are powerful, check the coefficient and schedules before any session.
  • Avoid sailing too close to the pontoons and remnants of Arromanches where structures can be dangerous.
  • The south wind is side-off and makes practice impossible, do not attempt.
