New Providence

Love Beach, on the northwest coast of New Providence in Nassau, offers a calmer setting than the nearby large beaches. It is a spot appreciated for its discreet atmosphere, relatively preserved beach, and convenient access from the city.

People come here mainly to kitesurf in a pleasant environment, with often clean water and a backdrop of

coral and sand. The spot is better known to locals and visitors looking for a less crowded place than the very touristy beaches of Nassau.

Location

Detailed information

The spot works best when the wind comes from the east to northeast sector, with a reading often side-on to side-shore depending on the beach and the exact angle of the flow. The water surface depends a lot on the day's exposure, but generally, one finds more comfortable sailing in relatively flat to slightly choppy water in sheltered areas, with more relief if the swell enters the reef. According to consulted sources, the immediate area is associated with corals and a mixed rock/sand bottom, which requires careful selection of the launch area.

Launching is done from the beach, with a simpler launch zone where sand dominates. Areas closer to the reef and rocky zones require vigilance during takeoff and landing, especially if one is kitesurfing with little tide or with residual waves. The spot is especially interesting for riders capable of reading the water surface and managing a coastal environment where the bottom can quickly become more technical.

Depth varies quickly depending on where one enters the water, with areas where one can stand quite far and others where the relief drops more quickly near rocky passages. The spot remains more comfortable at stable or medium tide, when the launch area is more readable and one can better see the coral patches and exposed stones.

Risks & Safety

  • There are rocks and coral exposed in places, so avoid poorly read areas.
  • The mixed sand-rock bottom can be surprising near the shore, especially at low tide.
  • The reef makes some launches and returns more technical when the swell rises.
