Plage d'Estavayer-le-Lac
Switzerland · Fribourg
The Estavayer-le-Lac beach, on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel in the canton of Fribourg, is a popular kitesurfing spot in French-speaking Switzerland. It offers a pleasant setting with an accessible beach and open areas for navigation, close to the village of Estavayer and the Swisskite Club in Portalban.
It is a lively place in summer where locals come to enjoy the thermal wind from the lake. The spot is well-suited for intermediates but also appeals to experts due to its shallow and varied waters.
Close to Cudrefin, it is part of a region rich in water activities, with a friendly atmosphere typical of Swiss lakes.

The spot mainly works with winds from north, north-north-east, and north-east, which are side-shore relative to the south-west facing beach. These directions bring a flat to choppy water surface with shallow areas ideal for training. The launch is directly from the sandy beach, wide and easy to access, with a clear but crowded take-off zone in high season from June to August.
The navigation area extends offshore towards the lake, while remaining vigilant about boats and breakwaters. There is no tidal influence since it is a lake, but the thermal wind picks up in the afternoon in summer, making sessions more regular. Avoid navigating too close to ports or landing areas, at least 200 meters in the canton of Neuchâtel and according to Fribourg rules.
The Swisskite club in Portalban offers facilities like gear and lessons, perfect for riders who want to progress safely. The surroundings of Estavayer offer additional open areas for freeride or freestyle on flat water.
