Panoramica

Colombia is the rising star of Latin American kiting. In the La Guajira peninsula at the country's far northeast, trades blow 25-35 knots almost daily from December to April, with La Guajira often staying windy through August. Cabo de la Vela is the historic kiter base, a wind-swept Wayuu village, followed by Punta Gallinas (South America's northernmost point), Camarones and Riohacha. It's an adventure destination: dirt roads, ochre earth, traditional huts, no luxury but an authentic experience at soft prices. Conditions are outstanding for freestyle and foil.

Why Colombia is kite's best-kept secret

  • Trade winds 25-35 kts December to April, uncrowded spots.
  • Warm water 26-28°C year-round, no wetsuit.
  • Unique desert landscapes, Wayuu cultural experience.
  • Very low cost of living: stays €20-50/night, meals €5-10.
  • Rapidly growing infrastructure.

Kite season in Colombia — when to go

Best time: December to April, when strong, steady north-east trade winds blow over La Guajira and Santa Marta in the dry season. From May to September La Guajira (Cabo de la Vela) stays very windy, but wind is less regular elsewhere. October-November is the rainy season: light wind and muddy roads, avoid it. Lake Calima (thermal) works almost all year.
