Lago Titicaca

Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, is mainly known as a starting point to reach the Uros islands. The setting is spectacular, with the altitude, fresh water, and mountain views, but it is not a classic progression kitesurfing spot.

Sessions take place in a very local and touristy atmosphere at the same time, with rather calm navigation near the bay of Puno. It is an interesting area for a short session in flat water, provided that the wind conditions are right and there is good organization on site.

Location

Detailed information

In Puno, the water surface is that of a large altitude lake, so without marine swell and generally navigating in flat water. The forecasted wind often comes from the SW to W sector, which practically gives a wind that is rather side-on or side-shore depending on the exact orientation of the bay and the launch area. When the wind comes in well, the session remains accessible, but it should be kept in mind that altitude can make adjustments a bit different and that the wind can be irregular at times.

Launching generally takes place from the accessible shores around Puno, with clear areas but not well-suited for large improvised setups. It is advisable to prioritize a clean launch, with free space and assistance if possible, as the area is frequented by excursion boats to the Uros and other islands of the lake. The most logical navigable area remains that of the bay, where one can operate on a relatively clean water surface, without waves, but one must remain attentive to local traffic and boat departures.

The spot is not known for shorebreak or powerful chop, but gusts can appear quickly on the lake, especially when the thermal wind sets in. The session is therefore more enjoyable with a stable kite and sufficient safety margin. For an autonomous rider, it is a spot to approach as a technical but simple lake navigation, with few marine currents, but real vigilance to maintain regarding logistics and local water usage.
