Ilha do Mel

Off the port of Paranaguá, in southern Brazil, Ilha do Mel (“the honey island”) is a true natural sanctuary. Designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, it has no cars or paved roads — only sandy paths, a few fishing villages, and dense nature that descends to the sea. On its east coast, Praia Grande stretches over 7 kilometers of golden sand, bordered by the waves of the Atlantic. This is where kitesurfers come for powerful, pure, and silent sessions, in a setting that is undisturbed. Far from schools, hotels, and noise, one navigates here alone with the wind, surrounded by dunes and hills covered in vegetation. Ilha do Mel is the spot for purists and nature lovers: no chiringuitos, no music — just the wind, the sound of the waves, and the flight of birds. Access is by boat from Paranaguá or Pontal do Sul, then a short walk through sandy paths. Once on the beach, it quickly becomes clear why riders who come here speak of a feeling of total freedom.

Standort

Detaillierte Informationen

The Praia Grande spot offers powerful and clean conditions. Wind from east to southeast, side-on, between 14 and 22 knots, particularly steady between November and March. At low tide, the water becomes soft choppy, with long smooth sections between the waves. At medium to high tide, the swell sets in: waves of 1 to 2.5 meters, perfect for surfkite and big air. The sandy bottom and the infinite beach ensure easy and safe launching. On strong wind days, the spot transforms into a radical playground for experienced riders. But on milder days, the sea becomes a smooth conveyor belt, perfect for long crossings along the coast. The consistency of the wind and the purity of the setting make it a rare spot, both simple and exceptional.
