Arte Vida is the westernmost spot of Los Lances beach, in Tarifa, Andalusia. It is a wild place with a narrower beach and a natural atmosphere, favored by experienced riders for its waves.
The parking is located right next to the Arte Vida hotel, making access easy. Launching requires technique due to the underwater rocks and nearby relief.
Open year-round for kitesurfing, but prohibited during the high summer season from June 15 to September 15 in this area.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
Arte Vida mainly works with Poniente, a west wind that blows side-on or cross-onshore relative to the north-oriented beach. With this orientation, the water surface shapes well for waves when there is Atlantic swell, creating ideal conditions for strapless or wave riding.
The beach is narrow, so the launch area is limited: caution is needed to launch the kite without encroaching on the swimming area or pedestrians. Launching is done directly from the fine sand mixed with rocky areas to the north, with a steep slope towards the water. The navigation area extends north of Los Lances, but stay offshore to avoid the rocks close to the shore.
With Levante (east), the spot is in wind shadow due to the relief of Punta Paloma, making conditions unstable and side-off shore; to be avoided except in rare cases of southeast Levante. In pure Poniente, it is technical but perfect for wave sessions, with good space once launched.
Ideal conditions are a pure Poniente from west to northwest, 20-30 knots, with Atlantic swell for rideable waves. Perfect side-on for progressing in waves without too much shore break.
The water surface becomes wave with swell and Poniente, with significant waves due to the underwater rocks. The bottom is mostly sandy but rocky to the north, creating localized chop near the shore in side-on wind.
Currents are generally moderate in the area, influenced by the tides of the Strait of Gibraltar. Be cautious near the navigation channel south of Los Lances where the current can accelerate. Tides have an average amplitude, slightly altering the narrow beach.
Choose sizes from 7 to 11m² depending on the strength of the Poniente, smaller sizes in strong wind for wave riding. The 9-10m² sizes are best suited for typical 25-knot sessions.
The dominant wind regime is Poniente, a west to northwest wind, steady and strong, ideal for Arte Vida. Levante, an east wind, also blows often but makes this spot unusable most of the time. Winds are consistent 300 days a year, with typical strengths of 20-35 knots.
The climate in Tarifa is Mediterranean with strong sunshine all year round. Air temperatures range from 12-18°C in winter to 25-30°C in summer. The best months for kitesurfing are all, with a wind score of 85/100 and reliable winds from January to December.
The depth increases rapidly with a steep slope from the narrow beach. The bottom is predominantly sandy but scattered with rocks and stones, especially towards the north; you can stand only a few meters from the shore.
The water is cool in winter around 15-17°C, ideal with a 5/4mm wetsuit. It rises to 20-23°C in summer, a shorty or lycra is sufficient. The annual average is around 18-20°C.
