Tarifa

Los Lances North is the main spot in Tarifa, located in Andalusia in southern Spain. This vast beach of fine white sand stretches for about 7 kilometers along the Atlantic coast, offering an impressive setting between golden dunes and the ocean horizon. It is one of the few places in the region open to kitesurfing year-round, including during the summer months.

The spot is divided into several well-organized zones, with kite schools, bars, and complete facilities dedicated to sliding sports. The northern zone concentrates the majority of services and riders, while the southern zone, near the Jara River, attracts more tourists in summer. Los Lances North is appreciated for its accessibility for all levels and its cosmopolitan atmosphere typical of Tarifa.

The spot benefits from a strategic location at the Strait of Gibraltar, which creates exceptional and consistent wind conditions. It is a must-visit for riders seeking reliable and varied conditions.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

Riding conditions

Los Lances North works with both main wind regimes of Tarifa. The Poniente (west-southwest) blows from the Atlantic and creates side-onshore to onshore conditions on the spot, generating regular waves and a dynamically choppy water surface. The Levante (east-southeast) is accelerated by the venturi effect of the Strait of Gibraltar and blows side-offshore to offshore, creating gustier conditions and a more agitated water surface.

The beach is very wide with a secure and clear launching area, particularly in the north where the schools are concentrated. The water entry is easy on the fine sand. In high season, rescue boats are present for riders. The northern zone offers the best conditions for starting and progressing, while the southern zone, between the football field and the Jara River, can be more crowded in summer but remains accessible.

The spot works well at both low and high tide, with a water surface that remains navigable year-round. Be cautious of the occasional presence of algae, particularly in the southern zone. The Jara River channel can create localized currents to watch out for.

The ideal conditions at Los Lances North are found with a moderate to strong Poniente, which creates a perfect balance between onshore and side-onshore, generating regular waves and dynamic chop. The Levante can also offer excellent sessions, particularly for experienced riders who enjoy gusty and side-offshore conditions. The best sessions usually occur in late morning or early afternoon when the wind fully establishes.

Sea state

The water surface varies according to the wind regime. With the Poniente, there are regular waves and chop that create excellent conditions for freestyle and wave riding. With the Levante, the water becomes more choppy and gusty, with more pronounced chop. In general, conditions range between moderate chop and waves, rarely completely flat. The water may have algae in some areas, especially in the southern zone.

Sea currents

The currents at Los Lances North are generally moderate, but one must remain vigilant near the Jara River channel where the current can be stronger. Tides slightly influence conditions, but the spot remains navigable at all tides. There are no major dangerous currents, making the spot relatively safe for riders of all levels.

Recommended kite size

The recommended kite sizes vary according to conditions and the rider's level. For beginners with a moderate Poniente, a kite of 12-14 m² is appropriate. With a stronger and gusty Levante, experienced riders will use smaller kites, between 9-11 m². In light conditions, kites of 15-17 m² may be necessary. The spot accommodates all levels, so a full range of kites is available for rent.

Weather & wind

The wind regime at Los Lances North is dominated by two main winds. The Poniente blows regularly from the west-southwest, bringing a constant and reliable Atlantic breeze. The Levante, blowing from the east-southeast, is intensified by the venturi effect of the Strait of Gibraltar and can reach impressive speeds. These two winds create almost permanent conditions, which is why Tarifa is one of the world capitals of kitesurfing. The wind is generally stronger and more consistent in winter and spring.

Climate

Tarifa enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influences. Winters are mild and humid, while summers are hot and generally dry. Temperatures range from 10-15°C in winter to 25-30°C in summer. The spot works excellently year-round, with higher attendance in summer despite swimming restrictions in certain areas.

Depth

The depth at Los Lances North is gradual with a mainly sandy bottom. One can stand easily up to 50 meters from the shore, making the spot very accessible for beginners. Fine white sand predominates, with some small stones in places, particularly towards the north. This bottom composition is ideal for kitesurfing, offering good grip and maximum safety.

Water temperature

The water temperature at Los Lances North varies by season. In winter (December to February), the water is cold, between 12-14°C, requiring a thick wetsuit. In spring (March to May), it gradually rises to 15-18°C. In summer (June to September), the water reaches 20-23°C, allowing riders to use a shorty or even go without a wetsuit for the more resilient. In autumn (October to November), the temperature gradually drops back to 16-19°C.
