El Gouna

Zeytouna Beach is located on a small island connected by a bridge to the center of El Gouna, on the edge of the Red Sea. It is a popular spot for its shallow water and reliable wind, perfect for both beginners and experienced riders. The environment is calm with a beautiful view of the surrounding lagoons.

The beach offers a convenient launch area despite the sunbeds lined along the shore. There is an active kitesurfing community with schools nearby. Access is easy from downtown El Gouna.

The spot shines for its versatility year-round, with stable conditions making it a safe choice for progression.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The dominant wind comes from N, NNE, NE or NNW, providing a side-on or sideshore perfect relative to the south-facing beach. The navigation area is a large shallow lagoon, ideal for waterstarts and freestyle, with over 200 meters before it becomes deep. Launching is done from the water due to the many sunbeds on the sand, and the take-off area is small, so one must be vigilant not to disturb others.

The water surface is flat to chop in the lagoon, with no notable waves even in open sea. At low tide, there is enough water to navigate without issues, but high tide, whether rising or falling, is recommended for more comfort. No upwind obstacles like trees or hotels, making sessions clean and safe. Local features include a long bridge and an extensive shallow area, perfect for maneuvers.

Ideal conditions are a side-on wind from N to NE between 15 and 25 knots, stable throughout the day. This allows for smooth sessions without excessive gusts in the lagoon.

Sea state

The water surface is generally flat in the shallow lagoon, with a bit of chop when the wind picks up. No waves, even in open sea, which is perfect for freestyle and wakestyle.

Sea currents

Currents are weak in the protected lagoon. Tides have a moderate range, with no major impact on navigation. Just watch the areas near the passes where it can slightly accelerate.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 7 to 11m² on average, depending on wind strength around 14-17 knots. Take smaller (6-7m) for strong days and larger (12-13m) in light winter.

Weather & wind

The wind is steady and mainly comes from the north or northwest, with an average strength of 14 to 17 knots. The best months cover the entire year, but June to September offers the strongest stats. It is a constant thermal without a specific local name, reliable for long sessions.

Climate

El Gouna has a desert climate with warm temperatures year-round, ranging from 20°C in winter (December to February) to 38°C in summer (June to August). Humidity is low and the Red Sea tempers the air, making conditions pleasant even in the peak hot season. Winter remains mild, ideal for those escaping the cold.

Depth

The depth is very gradual with a sandy bottom in the lagoon, you can stand up to more than 200m from the shore, then it drops to 1.5m max with no reefs near the shore.

Water temperature

The water ranges from 21°C in winter to 30°C in summer, allowing for riding in a shorty or boardshorts year-round. In winter, a lycra is more than sufficient.
