Mangroovy Beach is a private beach north of El Gouna, on the Red Sea in Egypt. It stretches over 350 meters of fine sand with shallow waters ideal for kitesurfing. The spot is vast and sheltered by a colorful reef that separates the calm water areas from the deeper parts.
An IKO center is set up under the palm trees, with rental equipment and certified instructors. The beach is well-equipped with sun loungers, a bar, and easy access from Hurghada, 25 km away. It is a popular spot for locals and tourists for its consistent wind and relaxed atmosphere.
The scenery with the Red Sea and mountains in the background makes the sessions even more enjoyable, whether for learning or freeriding.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The wind generally blows cross-onshore from the left, mainly from the north (N, NNE, NE, NNW), making it a perfect side-on for the south-facing beach. It is a regular thermal wind year-round, with a high score of 99/100 and crazy speeds up to 246 kts in forecasts, but typically 15-25 knots in the strong season.
The navigation area is divided by a colorful reef: a large shallow lagoon (up to hip deep, 200-800m wide) for beginners and freestyle, ideal for launching and landing on the wide sandy beach without obstacles. Beyond, the water becomes deep and more choppy with some swell if the wind is strong. The center staff assists with launching and landing from lookout towers, with a rescue boat on standby.
Prefer high tide because at low tide (especially in summer), the lagoon can be very shallow or dry over 200m, making navigation technical. Wide downwind space (entry 200m), clear and clean water, but upwind 10min for experienced riders towards pro areas. Private spot reserved for kiters via centers like KBC or IKO.
The ideal conditions are with a cross-onshore wind from the north to northwest, between 15 and 25 knots. High tide for more comfort in the lagoon, avoiding dry areas.
The water is flat in the protected lagoon, with chop in the wind and some swell beyond the reef if the wind is strong. Clear and clean, perfect for spotting the sandy or coral bottom. No significant waves, rather choppy offshore.
The current is generally weak in the shallow lagoon. There are no extreme tides, but they influence the water level. Be cautious near the reef where it can accelerate slightly when exiting the lagoon.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 12m² in light to moderate wind, and 7 to 9m² in strong summer sessions. Adjust according to weight and level, with F-One or Gaastra gear available for rent.
The thermal wind mainly comes from the north (N to NNW), side-on to cross-onshore from the left. It is regular and consistent, strong in summer (May-September), with daily afternoon sessions. Typical strength is 15-30 knots, reliable due to the proximity of the desert.
The climate is hot and dry year-round on the Red Sea, with daytime temperatures ranging from 25°C in winter to 35-40°C in summer. Dry seasons dominate, with little rain, and the water remains warm, favoring kitesurfing 12 months a year. Best months are from April to November for strong wind, but sessions are possible from January to December.
The depth is gradual: shallow lagoon up to hip deep over 200-800m with sandy bottom and few rocks. Beyond the reef, it quickly becomes deep and more turbulent.
The water of the Red Sea is warm: 22-25°C in winter (January-March), and 28-32°C in summer (June-September). A 3/2mm wetsuit is recommended outside the hot season.
