El Gouna - KitePeople Spot
Egypt
El Gouna
KitePeople El Gouna is located in the Egyptian Red Sea, about 20 kilometers north of Hurghada. It is a spot specifically built to welcome kitesurfers, integrated into a modern resort with atypical architecture. The KitePeople center occupies a long private beach of fine sand with views of the turquoise lagoons and the orange-hued mountains in the background.
The spot extends over several square kilometers and offers an ideal setting for all levels. The shallow water, stable weather conditions, and professional infrastructure make it a benchmark destination for kitesurfing in Egypt. The atmosphere remains touristy with luxury hotels and full services, far from local authenticity but very accessible for travelers.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
- 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
- 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
- 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
- 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Useful information
The wind comes in side-on to side-onshore, making it a spot particularly suitable for beginners. The navigation area extends over a vast and shallow lagoon, with a width of over 800 meters of private beach allowing for safe take-offs and landings. The water generally does not exceed knee or hip height in the progression area.
Launching is particularly easy due to the sandy bottom and the almost total absence of rocks or reef remnants in the main area. Experienced riders can head further offshore to find more technical conditions. A small upwind ride of about 10 minutes allows access to more distant navigation areas. The spot has several zones: the main spot in front of the KitePeople station, and other nearby lagoons accessible, particularly to the north where the wind is more consistent with less turbulence.
Tides significantly alter the configuration of the spot and should be taken into account to optimize sessions. The turquoise and shallow water offers excellent visibility and maximum safety for learning.
Ideal conditions are between 12 and 25 knots of regular wind, with a side-on to side-onshore direction. The best period extends from April to October, although the spot is kitesurfable year-round. Days with regular wind and little turbulence, particularly north of the spot, offer the best sessions.
The water surface is very flat, the main characteristic of the spot. The shallow water of the lagoon creates smooth and predictable conditions, ideal for learning and progression. During low tides, the water becomes even shallower, while at high tides, the depth increases slightly but remains very accessible. The presence of corals and shells in certain areas requires special attention regarding positioning and walking in the water.
The current is generally weak in the Red Sea at El Gouna, making navigation easy for all levels. However, one must remain attentive to variations related to tides, which can significantly alter the configuration of the spot. Tides influence water depth and the positioning of navigation areas.
For typical conditions of 12 to 25 knots, kite sizes between 9 and 13 square meters are recommended. Beginners will benefit from larger kites (11-13 m²) to facilitate take-offs and landings in shallow water. Experienced riders can use smaller sizes (7-9 m²) for more responsiveness. The rental equipment available at KitePeople includes top-quality F-ONE kites suitable for all levels.
The wind regime is regular and reliable from April to November, with moderate speeds often between 12 and 25 knots. The wind mainly blows from the northwest and west, creating ideal side-on conditions. Outside of the best season, one can generally kitesurf year-round, although conditions are less guaranteed. The wind tends to be more consistent north of the spot (Makani Beach Club) where turbulence is reduced.
El Gouna enjoys a hot desert climate with ideal temperatures year-round. Winters are mild and pleasant, while summers are very hot. Precipitation is almost nonexistent, ensuring regular sunny days. The dry climate of the Egyptian desert creates stable and predictable weather conditions, particularly favorable for water activities.
The spot is characterized by a very gradual depth with a sandy bottom. In the main navigation area, the water does not exceed knee or hip height for several hundred meters. This shallow and gradual depth is one of the main strengths of the spot for learning. Experienced riders who go upwind can access deeper areas, particularly towards the lagoons located about 3 kilometers offshore. The sandy bottom is free of rocks or reef remnants in the main area, greatly enhancing safety.
The Red Sea at El Gouna offers pleasant temperatures year-round. In winter (January to March), the water is around 20-22°C, which may require a light wetsuit. In spring and autumn (April-May and September-October), temperatures rise to 24-26°C. In summer (June to August), the water reaches 27-29°C, providing very warm and comfortable conditions without thermal protection.
