Sal Rei

The Estoril beach in Sal Rei, on the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, is one of the most accessible kitesurfing destinations in the archipelago. Located facing the islet of Sal Rei which protects the bay, this beach offers flat waters ideal for learning while remaining dynamic for experienced riders. It is a social spot with good facilities, including beach clubs and developed tourist infrastructure.

Praia de Estoril stands out for its welcoming character: the waters are calm and safe thanks to the natural protection of the islet, making it a favored place for families and beginners. The spot benefits from a consistent and reliable wind during the season, with stable and sunny weather conditions. Access is easy, the beach is well-equipped, and several professional kitesurfing schools are established there.

Localização

Informações detalhadas

Praia de Estoril offers exceptional conditions for kitesurfing, particularly due to the protection offered by the islet of Sal Rei. The waters are generally very flat, creating a lagoon-like water surface ideal for progression. The wind mainly blows from the northeast (NE) and north-northeast (NNE), with a side-shore to side-on orientation relative to the beach, allowing for safe and controlled navigation.

Launching is very easy from the fine sandy beach. The take-off area extends along the entire length of Praia de Estoril, with no major obstacles. The water surface remains flat even at high tide, although the depth increases gradually. At low tide, the waters become even flatter and shallower, creating almost pool-like conditions perfect for beginners. The wind generally stabilizes from 11 am and decreases in intensity around 5 pm.

Several secondary spots are accessible nearby: a reef with a small wave up to waist height offers opportunities to practice maneuvers, while the Léoa spot, located 900 meters away, offers a larger wave for those seeking more dynamic conditions. Local guides can direct you to the best spot of the day based on wind direction and swell.

Riscos e segurança

  • Praia de Estoril is considered one of the safest beaches on the island for swimming and kitesurfing, with calm waters and few dangerous currents.

  • The islet of Sal Rei effectively protects the bay from strong waves and treacherous currents present elsewhere on the island.

  • The current may be stronger near the channel separating the beach from the islet, so it is advisable to stay alert in this area.

  • Although the wind is generally reliable, it can blow strongly, particularly in winter, which may lift sand if you are just looking to relax on the beach.

  • Local kitesurfing schools use safety boats to supervise sessions, adding an extra layer of safety.
