Ponta Preta
Cape Verde · Sal
Ponta Preta is a legendary spot located on the west side of Sal Island, Cape Verde. It is a mythical place in the kitesurfing world, known for its powerful and fast waves that break over a rocky reef. The spot hosted the GKA World Cup of kitesurfing from 2018 to 2020, and it is the playground of champions like Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino.
The atmosphere at Ponta Preta is that of an elite spot, reserved for experienced riders. Just a 15-minute drive from the village of Santa Maria, it is a place where conditions can be extreme and unpredictable. Waves can reach impressive sizes, sometimes as high as houses during exceptional events.

Ponta Preta offers offshore wind conditions, meaning the wind blows from land to sea. This orientation creates clean and well-formed waves, but it also makes the spot very demanding as you have to manage the drift out to sea. The wind is generally side-offshore, requiring constant vigilance to avoid being pushed too far out.
The water is dominated by reef waves that break quickly and powerfully. Getting in is technically difficult with a strong shore break to cross. Launching kites can be turbulent due to scattered rocks and the uneven terrain of the launch area. Once at sea, conditions become more stable, but the waves come quickly and with a lot of power.
The best conditions occur with swell from the north to northwest. The beach is rocky and dangerous, limiting safe riding areas. Experienced riders can enjoy long wave riding sessions with waves that offer long and smooth trajectories.
