Cabo Verde
Ponta Antonia, located on the northeast coast of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, is a popular spot for kitesurfers due to its consistent winds and flat, protected water. This small bay offers a wild setting with a fine sandy beach in front of a rocky lava desert, perfect for quiet sessions away from the crowds.
The spot is accessible by 4x4 from Espingueira, adding a touch of adventure to kite days. Locals and schools like KiteKriol organize trips to enjoy the varied conditions, from the flat inside to small outer waves.
It is an authentic place where you can ride in the midst of nature, with few people and a relaxed atmosphere.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The main wind comes from the northeast (NE) and blows side-onshore relative to the southeast-facing beach, providing consistent power without the risk of going offshore. With typical speeds of 15 to 25 knots, it is ideal for freeride, freestyle, or waves. The inner area is a large flat section perfect for tricks and learning, while the outside offers waves up to 2.5 m that break on the rocks.
Launching takes place on a medium-sized sandy beach, with a good takeoff and landing area. Be careful to choose the right window to avoid the rocks during launch. Tides do not significantly impact the spot, but at low tide, the water remains navigable with feet in the first meters. For downwinders, you can head towards other bays like Praia da Atalanta, but always with a planned pickup.
Local schools offer storage and rescue boat services, which secures sessions even for intermediates. The water state transitions from flat to light chop inside, and to small/medium waves outside depending on the swell.
The ideal conditions are a NE wind of 18 to 25 knots, side-onshore, with a moderate swell for rideable waves without too much danger. This allows for mixed flat and wave sessions for all confirmed levels.
The water state varies from a large flat inner area, ideal for freestyle, to light chop and small to medium waves (up to 2.5 m) on the outer part that break on the rocks. The bay is protected from the main swell, offering smooth water for progression.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay of Ponta Antonia. However, it is important to monitor areas near the outer waves where the current can accelerate with the swell. Tides are moderate, with no major impact on the inner navigation.
For a 75 kg rider, the most common sizes are 9 m² and 11 m², suitable for 15-25 knot winds. On lighter days, opt for 11-12 m², and 7-9 m² when it picks up.
The wind regime is dominated by the northeast trade winds, which blow regularly and consistently from November to June, with gusts up to 28 knots. You often have 15-25 knots side-onshore, stable and powerful, ideal for all disciplines. The best months cover the entire year according to data, but the peak is in the dry season.
