Carcavelos

The Carcavelos beach, to the west of Lisbon, is a large urban spot that is easily accessible, very frequented by locals as well as visitors. It is a long and exposed beach, known for its wide sandy strip and very lively atmosphere.

In kitesurfing, Carcavelos is mainly a navigation spot when the wind is well established and the beach is sufficiently clear. The high attendance in season requires caution at takeoff and landing, but the spot remains a reference close to the capital for riding when conditions align.

Posizione

Informazioni dettagliate

Carcavelos mainly works with a wind from NW to W, which often arrives here side-on depending on the orientation of the beach. According to local guides and schools in the area, the Nortada can hold well in summer, but the spot remains less regular than the larger, more open beaches along the west coast. With a wind around 15 knots, one is in a reasonable navigation range for an average build, but often limited if the wind is very gusty or if the thermal takes time to kick in.

The water surface is generally cleaner when the swell is low to moderate. At low tide, the spot can become more technical with less water and areas of sandbars that mark the water surface more. At high tide, launching is simpler and the takeoff area more comfortable, but space can be reduced by crowds and the beach configuration. It is advisable to favor the most open part of the sand, away from bathers, and to maintain a well-controlled takeoff zone. With a north to northwest wind, one often navigates in side-off to side-on depending on the exact angle of the day, which requires a good level of navigation and constant attention offshore. The spot is more tolerable for riders who are already autonomous than for complete beginners.

Rischi e sicurezza

  • The cohabitation with bathers is a real point of vigilance in season.
  • The side-off wind can become engaging if one goes too far offshore.
  • The shorebreak and tide variations can complicate takeoff and return.
