Praia dos Moinhos
Portugal · Setúbal
Praia dos Moinhos, in Alcochete, is a sailing spot on the Tagus River, appreciated for its easy access and proximity to Lisbon. It is mainly visited to ride in a local atmosphere, with a river setting quite different from classic Atlantic beaches.
The spot works particularly well when the wind is established and the tide is suitable, as the water and sailing space change quickly here. It is an interesting spot for riders looking for an accessible playground, with a real assessment of the conditions to be made before heading out on the water.

At Praia dos Moinhos, the wind is most often exploitable in side-on to side-shore depending on the dominant flow orientation, with better sessions when the NW to W regime sets in. It is a river spot subject to the Tagus tides, so the water surface can change significantly between low and high tide. When the tide is well aligned, the navigation area is more comfortable and launching is simpler; when it is unfavorable, the usable space shrinks and the current becomes more present.
The water surface is generally more flat to chop, with little wave in the oceanic sense, but with rides and ripples related to the wind, current, and river traffic. Launching is done from the bank or beach depending on the water level, with a preparation area to keep clean and clear. One must remain attentive to the evolution of the river level, as the spot is very dependent on the tide and the timing of the session. Conditions are therefore good for a kitesurfer who knows how to read the water and adapt their departure to the navigation window.
