Hirel

The beach of Hirel, located in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel in Brittany, offers a large stretch of sand ideal for walks and water activities. It is a spot known to kitesurf practitioners for its practice possible only at high tide.

Close to Saint-Malo, it shares the bay with other spots like Lancieux or Saint-Jacut, but Hirel stands out for its unique access during spring tides. Locals also practice land sailing on the vast foreshore.

The atmosphere is calm, with low grasses on the sand and a stunning view of Mont Saint-Michel in the distance.

Posizione

Informazioni dettagliate

The spot at Hirel beach mainly works from Northwest to East, with wind often side-on or side-shore depending on the dominant direction. The launch is directly on the large sandy beach, easy to access, but only two hours before and after high tide as the water recedes very far at low tide, making navigation impossible.

The navigation area is wide in the heart of the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, with calm and shallow water even at high tide, perfect for freeride or strapless sessions. The take-off is done on the clear beach, without major obstacles, but one must anticipate the high tide coefficients where it is the only navigable spot in the area.

Local feature: strong tidal range, up to 12-14 meters, which transforms the beach into a vast stretch of sand at low tide. The wind is more consistent in the protected bay, but beware of gusts if there is a pure East wind. Ideal for combining with land sailing outside of kite sessions.

Rischi e sicurezza

  • Practice only two hours before and after high tide to avoid getting stuck on the sand.
  • Be cautious of strong tide coefficients that can pull the water back very far quickly.
  • Check local regulations and share the space with land sailors.
