Saint-Sulpice

The Laviau beach in Saint-Sulpice, on the shores of Lac Léman in the canton of Vaud, is a large stretch of sand and grass bordered by a few trees. It is a popular spot for local riders due to its regular side-shore wind from the southwest and easy access from Lausanne. The setting is simple, with a refreshment stand in summer and parking near the football fields, but it is advisable to prefer the west side to avoid picnickers and crowded areas.

Open only from September 1 to June 15, the spot closes in summer to make way for bathers in the area marked by yellow buoys. A dedicated channel serves as an entry and exit for kiters, and the inflation area is clearly marked to the west.

Close to the Venoge and the island of Birds in a nature reserve, this spot requires respect for local rules displayed on a sign near the fountain.

Detaillierte Informationen

The spot works ideally with a side-shore southwest wind, coming from the side relative to the northeast/southwest oriented beach, perfect for a smooth launch and stable navigation. South and south-southwest winds are also usable, but southwest remains the most reliable thermal during depressions. The navigation area is a dedicated corridor marked, with mandatory entry and exit through the specific channel to avoid the bathers' area marked by yellow buoys.

The launch takes place on the west side of the beach, where you inflate the kite and prepare the lines before positioning yourself. You need to launch the kite away from the shore to avoid wind shadow from the trees and the downwind dike. No tide on the lake, so the water surface remains constant: flat to chop depending on wind strength, with flat areas near the shore ideal for jumps and freestyle. Avoid navigating west of the Venoge or too close to the island of Birds, staying offshore to respect the nature reserve.

In case of west wind, be careful of downwind drift towards the east where there is no easy landing area. Spend little time with the kite in the air on land, the wind can be capricious. The beach is of medium size for launching/landing, sandy but sometimes crowded.
