Plage de Portalban
Switzerland · Fribourg
The Portalban beach, on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel in the canton of Fribourg, is a popular spot for local kitesurfers. With its fine sandy beach and lively camping, it offers a mix of sport and relaxation, complemented by a restaurant and a snack bar right by the water.
Located between Cudrefin and Estavayer-le-Lac, it attracts visitors for its easy access and friendly atmosphere. The Swisskite Club Portalban is well established here, hosting events like the King of the Lake in September.
It is a family-friendly place in summer, with beach volleyball and playgrounds, but the navigation areas are regulated for safety.

The spot works ideally with a west or southwest wind, coming in side-on or side-shore relative to the northeast-facing beach. The launch is done on the fine sandy beach, easy and obstacle-free, with a wide take-off area in front of the club.
The navigation area extends offshore on the lake, where you can stand quite far out thanks to the gradual bottom. In summer, the beach is busy, so respect the limited zones to avoid bathers: rather navigate offshore towards the center of the lake.
No significant tide on this freshwater lake, the water remains stable. The thermal wind can pick up in the afternoon in summer, but morning sessions are often cleaner. The club provides clear rules to follow for a serene navigation.
