Pentrez

The beach of Pentrez, located in the Douarnenez Bay in Brittany, offers a long stretch of sand with plenty of space to ride. It is a popular spot for riders due to its sandy beach and its exposure to the prevailing westerly winds. The cliffs at the northern and southern ends frame the area, creating a typical setting of the Finistère coast.

Close to Châteaulin and about forty minutes from Brest, Pentrez attracts both locals and visitors looking for regular sessions. Access is easy with parking and sometimes camping nearby, in a relaxed atmosphere typical of Brittany.

Standort

Detaillierte Informationen

The beach of Pentrez is oriented west-southwest, making it a perfect spot for side-on or side-shore winds coming from the west and northwest, which are most frequent in Brittany. The water entry is directly from the long sandy beach, with a tidal takeoff and landing area that varies with the tide: wide and spacious at high tide, more restricted at low tide where careful positioning is necessary.

The navigation area extends offshore in the bay, with a water surface that transitions from chop to small waves, smaller than at L'Aber but consistent in strong winds. At high tide, the water rises well and allows for freeride or wave sessions without restriction, while at low tide, shallow areas appear, ideal for beginners but requiring attention to avoid dry spots. The northern and southern cliffs delineate the safe area, preventing drift towards neighboring spots like Kervel.

Local feature: Douarnenez Bay protects from extreme westerly Atlantic winds, making the spot safer than the neighboring Crozon peninsula when it blows hard. Favor the central part of the beach for launching, and watch the tides as the range is significant in Brittany.

Risiken & Sicherheit

  • Cliffs border the northern and southern ends of the beach, to be avoided for takeoff and landing.
  • The launch area is tidal: watch for low tide when space reduces significantly.
  • Stay in the central area to avoid potential rocks and currents near the channels.
