Marseillan

The Étang de Thau in Marseillan is an exceptional inland water body located in Occitanie, between Sète and Marseillan. It is one of the largest coastal lakes in France, offering a unique setting for kitesurfing with its vast flat water areas and consistent conditions. The Marseillan site represents the west access of the lagoon, less frequented than the Pont-Levis side of Sète but equally interesting. It is a place where one can experience the authenticity of kitesurfing on flat water, away from the crowds, with stable and predictable conditions throughout the year.

The site is easily accessible and offers a variety of navigation zones.

Detaillierte Informationen

The Étang de Thau is a flat and safe water spot, ideal for progressing and mastering basic techniques. The shallow depth allows one to stand in a large part of the navigation area, which reassures beginners. The dominant wind is the Tramontane from the north-west, which offers side-shore to side-on conditions depending on your position on the lagoon. All wind orientations are usable except when the wind comes too much from the east, as Mont Saint-Clair in Sète creates significant wind shadows that degrade conditions.

Launching is done from the Marseillan parking lot, with direct access to the water. Unlike the Pont-Levis which requires a 15-minute walk, Marseillan offers more direct accessibility. The launch area is generally clear and allows for good organization, especially in the low season. The sandbank that crosses the lagoon for about 12 kilometers offers varied navigation possibilities, with the opportunity to perform spectacular downwinds to other areas of the lake.

Conditions vary with the tides: at low tide, the water remains flat but some areas become very shallow. At high tide, the water covers more of the sandbank and offers more navigation space. The water remains generally calm with little chop, except in case of very strong wind where small waves may form.
