Plage du Racou
France · Occitanie
The Racou beach, in Argelès-sur-Mer in Occitanie, is a popular spot for kiters due to its wide sandy beach and family-friendly atmosphere. Located in the heart of the Côte Vermeille, it offers a pleasant setting with views of the Albères and nearby Spain.
It is an ideal retreat when the winds are too strong elsewhere, like in Leucate. Locals appreciate the regular thermal wind and the space to set up without excessive crowds.
Close to amenities, it combines accessibility and solid conditions for all levels.

The spot works well with a Northwest wind (Tramontane) coming side-on from the left of the east-west oriented beach, or from a Southeast thermal side-shore from the right. Launching is done directly from the sand, easy even for beginners, with a wide take-off area to the north of the beach.
The navigation area extends 500 meters wide, up to 1 km offshore safely, but stay to the north to avoid swimmers in the center and south during summer. The water surface is choppy in strong winds, flatter in light thermal; tides have little influence but at low tide, flatter areas form near the shore.
Local peculiarity: southeast thermal effect that rises quickly in the afternoon, independent of the interior plains. Avoid days of strong Tramontane if you are not experienced, as the wind picks up quickly offshore.
