Leucate

Éole is the most iconic flat spot in the south of France. Located on the Leucate lagoon, it offers an ultra-smooth and safe water surface, fed by the famous Tramontane. This official FFVL site is perfectly equipped: take-off zones, rescue, schools, and a constant wind for over 250 days a year. It’s the perfect spot to learn, progress, and work on tricks in a flat and clean environment. The conditions are unique in Europe: strong wind, a mirror-like surface, and total safety.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The water surface is totally flat, shallow, and without waves. The wind from northwest (Tramontane) blows side-shore or slightly side-off depending on the season. The sandy bottom and shallow depth (often 50 cm to 1.5 m) make it a dream spot for freestyle. Access is easy, parking is close, and the zones are well marked. The spot works all day without tides, making it a reliable choice in any season. The space is large, but attendance can be high on windy weekends.

Ideal wind
NWdominant
W
SW

Wind from northwest (Tramontane), between 20 and 35 knots. This is the prime direction of the spot, perfectly oriented side-shore.

Sea state

Water surface is 100% flat. The water remains smooth even in strong winds. The bottom is sandy or muddy depending on the areas, posing no danger. The water may become slightly murky after several days of wind, but the surface remains ideal for freestyle.

Sea currents

No current: closed water surface. The lagoon is calm, with no drift or outgoing current. Navigation is therefore perfectly stable and safe.

Recommended kite size

Riders generally use kites from 5 to 9 m². In gentler Tramontane, 10 m² may be suitable. On strong days, 6–7 m² is more than enough.

Weather & wind

The Tramontane (northwest) is the engine of the spot, blowing between 20 and 40 knots. Its side-shore orientation makes navigation stable and reassuring. In summer, the sea breeze (E/SE) can sometimes take over, gentler but consistent. The wind is reliable, strong, and frequent: it has one of the best ratios of windy days in Europe.

Climate

Dry and windy Mediterranean climate. Temperatures range between 10°C and 30°C. The sun is present for more than 300 days a year. The wind blows strongly most of the year, especially from March to November. Winters remain navigable but cooler. The dry air and low precipitation make sessions very comfortable.

Depth

Between 0.5 and 1.5 meters. You can stand in a large part of the water surface.

Water temperature

Between 12°C and 25°C depending on the season. The lagoon heats up quickly in spring, shorty possible from April.
