Guadalmar

Guadalmar, south of Malaga, is a popular beach spot for its easy access and wide setting on the edge of the city. Guadalmar beach offers a convenient playground for kitesurfing, with space on the sand and a rather local atmosphere.

This spot is especially interesting when the wind is well established. According to spot feedback, people come here to ride in good conditions without straying far from Malaga.

The wind is most often exploitable when it comes from E or SW, with the reading of the water surface depending mainly on the exact orientation and strength of the thermal or a frontal situation. At this spot, the wind is generally more favorable in side-shore to side-on depending on the direction, allowing for more relaxed navigation than in too onshore winds. Launching is done from a large sandy beach, with space to prepare the kite and take off without being too cramped. The spot is suitable for simple coastal navigation, but one must remain attentive to beach traffic and swimming areas when present.

The water surface is generally flatter to slightly choppy, with behavior becoming more irregular if the wind rises or if the current stirs the area. Local riders mainly find a spot for progression and free navigation, with a long beach that allows them to move away from the most crowded area. The launch area requires keeping the kite well controlled, as the urban environment and the presence of other users necessitate clean maneuvers.

The best sessions occur with wind from the E to S sector, sufficiently consistent to launch from the beach without difficulty. A stable flow around 20 knots generally provides the most interesting conditions to enjoy the spot.

Days with well-established thermal winds are often the cleanest, especially when the wind maintains good consistency without being too turbulent. The spot is then more enjoyable for freeride and maneuvers.

État de la mer

The water surface is most often flat to chop, with the sea becoming more formed when the wind strengthens or gusts. The spot is not known for regular waves, but rather for a surface suitable for freeride and progression.

When the wind is well oriented, one finds fairly clean navigation near the shore, then a bit more relief offshore. The level of comfort mainly depends on the combination of wind, current, and the area's traffic.

Courants marins

The current is generally weak to moderate, but it can become more noticeable near discharge areas and flow sectors. One must remain attentive to drift when the wind is irregular or when maritime pressure changes.

The tide mainly influences the width of the available beach and the comfort of launching, more than the pure feasibility of the spot. Navigation remains possible in both tidal states, but the launch area can be easier at low tide when the beach is wider.

Taille de kite recommandée

With wind around 20 knots, the most common sizes are 7 to 10 m², depending on the rider's size and level. Below that, one can use an 11 m² if the wind is lighter, but the spot becomes especially interesting when the smaller kite remains comfortable.

For an average rider, a range of 8, 9, or 10 m² covers most of the exploitable sessions here. On stronger days, a 7 m² may be necessary.

Météo & vent

The spot works with winds from the East and Southwest, with a share of thermal and frontal wind depending on the day. When the thermal sets in, it can provide cleaner and more consistent wind, significantly improving the session.

The strength is often sufficient for freeride or light freestyle, especially when the weather pattern is well established. With a wind score around 20 knots, the spot can be exploitable, but the quality depends greatly on the orientation and stability of the flow.

Climat

The climate in Malaga is mild Mediterranean, with generally moderate winters and hot summers. Air temperatures hover around 20°C in winter and often rise between 25°C and 35°C in summer, allowing for kitesurfing for a good part of the year.

The summer period is pleasant but can be more crowded, while spring and autumn often offer a better compromise between temperature and comfort on the beach. The best months remain variable depending on the type of wind sought and weather stability.

Profondeur

The depth is rather gradual and the bottom is mostly sandy. One can generally stand at a good distance when entering the water, which facilitates launching and the first runs.

The area remains easy to read, but one must be cautious near current variations and areas where the bottom can shift with sand movements.

Température de l’eau

The water is generally cooler in winter and becomes more pleasant in summer and early autumn. On the coast of Malaga, one often kites in a suitable suit depending on the season, with lighter needs in the heart of summer.

In practice, one should plan for more serious thermal protection outside the warm season, then adjust according to session length and individual sensitivity to cold.
