Anse La Raie

Anse La Raie beach, located in the northeast of Mauritius near Cap Malheureux, is a quiet spot lined with filaos and fine sand. It is a favorite place for locals and riders for its protected lagoon and relaxed atmosphere.

The spot offers a varied water plan with a flat basin ideal for beginners and a large freeride area once out of the bay. There are fewer people compared to the spots in the southwest, making it a perfect choice for calm sessions.

Schools like Ion Club or Dreamteam are on-site for equipment and lessons, in a paradise-like setting with turquoise water.

The spot is oriented facing east, with a main wind side-onshore from east or northeast that becomes side once out of the bay. The water entry is tricky due to rocks at the edge, you need to walk in the shallow water of the basin to take off, often with the wind at your back at the start.

The navigation area is divided into three: a flat basin closed by rocks perfect for learning, freestyle, or foiling, very shallow with foot everywhere; then a huge freeride area in the lagoon once the rocks are passed, with flat water or slight chop and gigantic space; finally, moderate waves on the outer reef about 2 km away, side but with no rescue possible outside the lagoon.

The take-off area is a small grassy space, caution with nearby trees. Easy rigging on grass, but booties are mandatory for shells and rocks. The wind is reinforced by the trade winds, constant in season.

Vent ideal
Edominant
NEdominant

The ideal conditions are a side-onshore wind from east to northeast between 15 and 25 knots, constant and without gusts, to fully enjoy the flat basin or freeride.

État de la mer

The water plan is flat in the basin, even in strong winds, with a slight chop in freeride in the lagoon. Waves of 0.5 to 2 meters form on the outer reef for the more experienced.

Courants marins

The current is generally weak in the protected lagoon, but it can be present in certain areas and more pronounced near the channel or towards the outer reef. Tides have little influence on the spot due to the shallow depth.

Taille de kite recommandée

For the basin and freeride, plan for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in medium wind. In foiling or waves, go down to 7 to 9 m² in strong wind.

Météo & vent

The prevailing winds are east to northeast trade winds, constant and reliable at 15 to 25 knots especially between June and October. The regime is reinforced by the opening of the spot, with regular sessions throughout the year but less consistent outside the dry season.

Climat

The climate at Anse La Raie is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round between 24 and 30°C. The dry season from May to October brings regular trade winds, while November to April is wetter with possible thermals in the afternoon.

Profondeur

The depth is very shallow in the basin with foot everywhere, less than 1 meter even far from the shore, sandy and coral bottom. Deeper in the outer lagoon for foiling after 200 m of walking.

Température de l’eau

The water is warm year-round with temperatures of 24 to 28°C, a short lycra is sufficient in the dry season, 3/2mm neoprene recommended in the southern winter.
