Praia Grande
Cabo Verde · São Vicente
Praia Grande à Calhau, on the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde, is a wave spot for advanced riders, located 1.5 km northwest of the village of Calhau. The beach runs along volcanic rocks of Monte Calhau and offers an isolated setting, accessible by rental car or taxi that must return to pick you up.
It is a wild place, not easy to access, with a sandy beach near rocky areas. Locals and experienced visitors come here for the reef waves, in a tranquil atmosphere away from more touristy spots like Salamansa.
The spot requires logistical preparation but rewards with pure sessions in trade winds that are consistent.

The main wind comes from the northeast, cross-onshore relative to the northwest-facing beach, creating ideal conditions for wave riding with a good angle for jumping and riding the waves. The sailing area extends along the beach, with a reef break to the right offering waves from 0.3 to 2.5 meters, but aim for the eastern part for the best clean and hollow waves.
Launching takes place on a sandy and rocky beach with marked shorebreak, so be careful with launching and landing, especially for experts. There is no strong dependence on tides, the water remains navigable at all times, but the channel without waves allows for easier entry and exit. Avoid areas close to volcanic rocks to stay safe.
Local peculiarity: isolated spot, plan for a 4x4 or return taxi as there is no reliable public transport, and few people on the water for uncrowded sessions.
