The spot works mainly with winds from SE to S, which come side-on or side-shore relative to the northwest-facing beach. The water state is chop upwind with some moderate waves, perfect for freeride or wave tricks. Launching is done directly from the fine sandy beach, easy even for intermediates, but be careful at the river mouth where the water is shallow at first.
The navigation area extends along the beach up to Dolphin Beach to the north, with good width to avoid crowds. At low tide, the water remains shallow near the shore, ideal for progression, while at high tide it becomes more choppy with surfable waves. Launches are done on the wide beach, but the wind can be a bit gusty at the dune edges, better to head out quickly where it stabilizes.
Local feature: the influence of the Milnerton lagoon creates calm areas for beginners, but the river current can drift north. For downwinders, it's great towards Big Bay, always with a buddy.
